Botswana : BOFINET signs inks BWP 300 milion, five year deal with BTCL.

Botswana Fibre Network (BoFiNet) has signed contract with the Botswana Telecommunications Corporation (BTCL).

The contract worth BWP 300 million for the next five years is for the provision of internet capacity to London and other destinations through the West Africa Cable System (WACS) and East Africa Subsea System (EASSY).

According to Mabua Mabua, CEO, BoFiNet, the firm will be using part of the proceeds from the contracts to invest network expansion aiming at expanding its reach to other parts of the country.

In December 2013, BoFiNet completed the process of receiving all wholesale assets from BTCL, and at present both the firms are working to conclude the physical transfer. BoFiNet has lowered tariffs for international and national bandwidth by between 30 and 70 percent enabling service providers to buy more capacity and pass the benefits on to the customers.

Negotiations are also in progress with other international carriers to reduce the costs of procuring foreign transit capacity allowing further reduction in Botswana's international connectivity costs and tariffs.
