Botany expert to visit reserve.

RENOWNED environmental campaigner and botanist David Bellamy is to visit a Stockton nature reserve this weekend.

Professor Bellamy has been invited by the Friends of Greenvale (FoG) Local Nature Reserve, and will join members of Stockton Council for a tour of the reserve.

The main aim of FoG is to endeavour to protect the flora and fauna of Stockton's biggest wild-flower meadow, as well as improving the children's play area.

After lunching with the group Mr Bellamy will walk around the nature reserve, which is surrounded on all sides by urban housing development.

Gladys Baker founder member of the Friends of the Greenvale Local Nature Reserve said they were delighted at the visit.

"We have a truly unique natural space in the Greenvale reserve which is used by everyone in the community for a variety of reasons," she said.

"It is home to so many locally rare wild-flowers which is why it's so important that the area should be protected and respected by those living nearby."

She added: "We host regular meetings at the Fairfield pub and are always on the lookout for more people to join our group and get actively involved in the work we are trying to achieve. Whether it's organising a community litter pick, giving guided walks and talks about the amazing flowers that can be found in the reserve to helping us prepare funding documents.

Anyone interested in joining the group can go along to their next meeting at the Fairfield pub on September 27 from 7pm, or contact Don and Gladys Baker on 01642 580018 or 075265350672 for more details.
