Botanical award for resort.

SOUTHPORT has proved its flower power again at the North West In Bloom horticultural awards.

The town was named Best Large Coastal Resort for 2005 and nominated t o represent the region in the Britain In Bloom competition next year.

Sefton council entered Southport in the 'floral Oscars' for the 16th year running with the judges visiting the town in July.

Their verdict was announced during a ceremony at Bolton's Reebok Stadium on Friday with Southport beating last year's winners Blackpool into second place.

The news comes after the Botanic Gardens and Hesketh Park received green flag awards for quality and design
