Boston mourns Ted Kennedy.
Summary: Thousands are expected to pay tribute to Ted Kennedy, whose casket will be placed in the John F Kennedy presidential library.
Boston has begun three days of mourning after Ted Kennedy's body was taken from the family compound in Cape Cod to the city that has been synonymous with the Kennedys for more than half a century.
Thousands are expected to pay tribute to the Senator, whose closed casket will remain in the John F. Kennedy presidential library and museum for two days of public visitation.
Across the country, flags were flown at half-mast at government buildings and military bases. At the home of the Boston Red Sox, Fenway Park, players lined up to pay homage as an air force bugler played the Last Post.
Plans are being finalised for a private memorial service at the presidential library this evening and for the funeral Mass on Saturday morning.
US President Barack Obama is scheduled to speak at the funeral. All of the living former presidents are also understood to be attending.
Kennedy will be buried on Saturday evening near his slain brothers - former President John F. Kennedy and former Senator Robert F. Kennedy - at Arlington National Cemetery in northern Virginia.
