Boston Beer Co. gets national TV coverage.

The Boston Beer Co. of Boston, MA got extensive national television coverage in a recent edition of the MacNeil/Lehrer News Hour, a PBS news analysis program.

In the piece, the Boston Beer Co. was used as an example of an American company facing excessive foreign trade barriers. Boston Beer Co. president Jim Koch spoke eloquently of the "brick wall" he has faced in exporting beer to Ireland and Sweden, and cited the relatively low tariffs faced by importers to this country.

During the lengthy segment, viewers were treated to numerous views of Boston Beer Co.'s Jamaica Plain, MA microbrewery. Bottles of Samuel Adams Boston Lager were shown racing along the brewery bottling line and Koch was shown holding a glass of his product in the brewery tap room.

Analysts paced before the brewery kettle, and discussed the beneficial effects that a reduction of foreign tariffs would have for U.S. breweries.

In addition to giving viewers insight into arcane trade issues, the program provided an appealing view of a small craft brewery (and gave the Boston Beer Co. an entree into upscale living rooms all over the country).
