Boss cooking up trouble; PICK OF THE DAY.

Live football Sky Sports 1, 8pm LIVERPOOL manager Brendan Rodgers gets a lot of stick for a style of management many believe should be confined to a business park in Slough, but he has revealed something darkly sophisticated about the way in which he delivers tough news to his players, writes Michael Brear. Rodgers says he took Pepe Reina out to dinner to discuss the lack of competition for the Reds' keeper, who has since gone to Napoli on loan.

Even millionaires must find it hard to refuse a free meal in a fancy restaurant and I imagine Rodgers ensured Reina felt free to order as many sides as he wanted, before subtly allowing him to sign his own death warrant: "Forget the club's strict nutritional plans for the night Pepe because the pastry chef here is an exquisite talent. You must order a dessert."

Then, after the huge meal, with the goalie sat rubbing his belly and groaning, will have come the knife from Rodgers.

"Pepe, are you hungry?" "No boss, not at all." "Didn't think so, you've got complacent lad. I'm signing Simon Mignolet."

So when Jonjo Shelvey lines up against the Reds for Swansea tonight, we'll all know it's because he couldn't turn down the chocolate pave with creme fraiche sorbet and hazelnut crumble.
