Boris slides into the limelight and helps to promote marching bands; POLITICS.

London Mayor Boris Johnson joined a marching band yesterday but promised the move was temporary.

Trombone in hand, he accompanied the musicians to launch Marching Youth Music Month. Mr Johnson said he had never been in a marching band before, and admitted his attempt to play the trombone was "hopeless".

He said: "I'm a great supporter of activities such as music and sport that provide opportunities for young people to try something different and learn new skills. I hope Marching Youth Music succeeds in encouraging more communities to create new marching bands and attract even more youngsters to take part, with London leading the way."

Members of marching bands from London and Essex joined the Mayor for the launch, which took place outside his City Hall office.
