The Bord Gais Energy Irish Book Awards, which celebrates the best of Irish literature published in the last year, has honoured the late Maeve Binchy with the Eason Popular Fiction Book of the Year prize for her last title A Week in Winter.

The popular author finished the novel just weeks before she passed away at the end of July this year and her husband, the writer Gordon Snell, accepted the award on Thursday evening, paying a warm tribute to her life's achievement and thanking her readers.

A Week in Winter is still high in the bestseller charts and tells the stories of a group of people with very different characters who meet in a hotel in the West of Ireland in winter.

Winners of the other categories for the Bord Gais Energy Irish Book Awards were: Eason Novel of the Year: Ancient Light by John Banville; John Murray Show Listeners' Choice Award: Just Mary by Mary O'Rourke; Ireland AM Crime Fiction Book of the Year: Broken Harbour by Tana French; Avonmore Cookbook of the Year: Eat Like an Italian by Catherine Fulvio; Argosy Non-Fiction Book of the Year: Country Girl by Edna O'Brien; and Lifestyle Sports Sports Book of the Year: My Olympic Dream by Katie Taylor.

Also, the Bord Gais Energy Bookshop of the Year was won by Bridge Street Books, Wicklow town; the winner of the Sunday Independent Newcomer of the Year was The Spinning Heart by Donal Ryan; and the International Educational Services Best Irish Published Book of the Year was won by Atlas of the Great Irish Famine by John Crowley, William J Smyth and Mike Murphy.

The prize for the Specsavers Children's Book of the Year: Junior section went to This Moose Belongs to Me by Oliver Jeffers; and the Senior section prize was awarded to Artemis Fowl, The Last Guardian by Eoin Colfer.

In addition, the public can vote for their overall 'Bord Gais Energy Book of the Year' from 23 November until 14 December. The winner will be announced on Monday 17 December 2012.
