Boozed-up Lib Dem 'hit paramedics' COURT.

Byline: GEOFF LAKEMAN

A DRUNKEN Lib Dem attacked two paramedics and a nurse after falling down stairs at a restaurant, a court heard yesterday.

Welsh Assembly member Mick Bates, 63, cut his head in the 2.20am fall and an ambulance was called.

But Cardiff magistrates heard Bates assaulted two paramedics and the nurse who tended his head injury.

Prosecutor Jessica Element said: "Before arriving at hospital Bates was abusive and aggressive to medics Carl Jones and Darren Noble.

"Bates assaulted them and at hospital he assaulted staff nurse Claire Morris."

Pc Geraint White, called to Charleston's in Cardiff, said: "There was a strong smell of drink, his speech was slurred and he was excitable."

Bates, the AM for Montgomeryshire, denies assault and public order offences.

His party has suspended him. The trial continues.
