Boost for dairy sector.

THE annual Semex Dairy Conference from January 11 to 13 is set to give the dairy industry itself a vital New Year boost.

For the first time since the opening event of 1990, the conference will host the prestigious Holstein UK President's Medal Award Ceremony for the Dairy Industry Young Achiever of the Year.

Head of Semex UK Drew Sloan urged other agri-businesses to strengthen their links with young farmers to help safeguard the future.

'It is vital that this does not become a beleaguered industry, facing ongoing down-sizing and exodus, and we must question whether we will have enough farmers in the future to sustain and grow the industry,' said Mr Sloan.

The awards will take place on the third day of the conference on January 13 - and will be presented by Holstein UK president William Towers.

As well as the prestigious trophy, the winner will receive an all-expenses paid place on Semex's 2004 Royal Winter Fair Tour to Toronto.
