Boole & Babbage Ships First Distributed Automation Solution for MQSeries; New AutoOPERATOR for MQSeries offering expands Command MQ with out-of-the-box automation solutions.

SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 7, 1997--Boole & Babbage, Inc. (NASDAQ:BOOL), the leader in end-to-end availability management for the enterprise, today announced that its AutoOPERATOR for MQSeries is installed in customers' production environments and is now generally available. The industry's first automation solution for ensuring the availability of MQSeries networks addresses a much needed demand to provide proactive problem-solving and automated resolution across multiplatform MQSeries environments.

As a fully integrated component of the comprehensive Boole & Babbage Command MQ family of products, AutoOPERATOR for MQSeries provides users with a flexible, full-featured automation tool for centralized management of all key resources in an MQSeries network.

"As MQSeries extends its enterprisewide reach and embraces all information systems, customers are discovering that message queues need continuous surveillance," said Chris O'Connell, product marketing director at Boole & Babbage. "Several customers, including some of the world's largest organizations, have already implemented AutoOPERATOR for MQSeries and reported immediate operational benefits in managing their MQSeries networks."

"Being able to easily and quickly see and respond to impending events ensures accurate resolution of problems and provides smooth, continuous MQSeries operations," said Larry McCammon, senior consulting systems engineer at Burlington Northern Santa Fe Corporation. "We were particularly impressed by the number of rules already embedded in AutoOPERATOR for MQSeries."

Event-driven Automation

With AutoOPERATOR for MQSeries, users can now automate MVS or distributed remote Queue Managers and view them on a single display. In addition, because AutoOPERATOR for MQSeries is event driven, it provides automation when events occur, instead of checking events at random intervals. For example, in a transaction-intensive environment, if a message arrives at the Dead Letter Queue, AutoOPERATOR for MQSeries immediately initiates automation routines according to the user's panel-driven definitions.

Out-of-the-Box Automation Solutions

AutoOPERATOR for MQSeries allows users to automate a vast array of MQSeries objects. In addition, the product ships with the following day-one solutions for immediate automation:

Dead Letter Queue Solution - AutoOPERATOR for MQSeries sends alerts to the user's chosen management console when messages erroneously appear in the Dead Letter Queue

System Queue Archival Solution - AutoOPERATOR for MQSeries transfers messages from system queues and archives them for future use

Service Interval Performance Solution - AutoOPERATOR for MQSeries monitors message delivery for improved performance

Queue Depth Management Solution - AutoOPERATOR for MQSeries sets parameters for controlling depth of messages in queues

Channel Availability Solution - AutoOPERATOR for MQSeries alerts users if channels are being started or stopped

Richard Hamilton, MQSeries support specialist at IBM Raleigh's Support Services, who spoke at the recent SHARE conference in San Francisco, said that "automation is a must" in order to identify critical events and act upon them and, ultimately protect MQSeries availability. With AutoOPERATOR for MQSeries, customers can easily scroll through event types, define and modify events, and automate corrective actions.

Boole & Babbage will be demonstrating AutoOPERATOR for MQSeries at the IBM CICS/MQSeries Technical Conference in San Francisco, April 7 - 9, 1997, at Booth No. 502. Jonathan Frakes, director and star of television's Star Trek: The Next Generation, will be on hand to promote the benefits of Command MQ.
