JULIAN WILSON'S absorbing autobiography, Some You Win-described in these pages on its hardback publication as "frankly recalled, beautifully written, good fun but sometimes breathtakingly pompous"-is issued in paperback on September 23 by Collins Willow (price pounds 6.99). The edition contains a new chapter in which Wilson reflects on the changes at the BBC since his departure-and heartwarmingly points out that "as the millennium approaches, the extraordinary good luck that has enveloped my life shows no sign of abating". Just in case you were worried about how he has been getting on.

THE late Alex Bird's autobiography, The Life And Secrets Of A Professional Punter, recounting the life and times of the self-styled pro-punter supreme, has been reissued. It is available from Abbey Books, Ty'n-y-Groes, Conwy LL32 8TX for pounds 15.99 including p&p.

"I did not dislike bookies, indeed I had many friends among them. But when it came to business I was their target and they were mine. All's fair in love and war," said Bird, and his account of the betting triumphs-and near-disasters-that contributed to his fortune is still an absorbing read.
