Book About Grizzly NH Murder Released by Husband/Wife True Crime Team.
Notes on a Killing is the true story of Meyer, who disappeared in February 2005. Meyer called her friend Sandy Merritt to convince her to resume an affair with Ken Carpenter - an affair Meyer had earlier urged Merritt to end. After the call, Meyer was never seen again and suspicion fell on Carpenter.
“We were drawn to this case because the cast of characters was so compelling. Pen Meyer is revered by family and friends. It was wonderful to write about her,” said co-author Flynn. “There is also a fascinating procedural story of how investigators got the evidence in an extremely difficult case to prosecute. They way they stitched the clues together was remarkable.”
The police investigation twisted around anonymous phone calls, hidden keys, notebooks filled with nefarious plans, and hundreds of bone fragments to be reassembled as if in some kind of skeletal jigsaw puzzle.
“This is the kind of story about which you can say truth was stranger than fiction. Add to that the human drama of this story and it wasn't hard to write a truly satisfying book,” said Lavoie.
This is the fourth nationally distributed book of NH true crime from author Kevin Flynn and his wife and co-author Rebecca Lavoie. The others included 2011's Legally Dead, named one of the year's top ten books by True Crime Book Reviews; Our Little Secret, a 2011 USA Best Book Awards finalist; and Wicked Intentions.
Flynn and Lavoie have developed a following among other noted authors who enjoy the rich narrative not usually found in books from this genre. Notes on a Killing has received advanced praise from some of today's hottest crime fiction and true crime writers.
“Harrowing and haunting, Notes on a Killing will have you in its grip,” says Megan Abbott, Edgar-winning author of The End of Everything and Dare Me. “As they proved with Our Little Secret, Kevin Flynn and Rebecca Lavoie illuminate the darkest corners, offering a story not only filled with twists and suspense but is also rich with heartbreak and humanity.”
Joseph Olshan, author of Cloudland, says, “Fragments of bones, mysterious fires, forensic nightmares, psychological knots are the high watermarks of Notes on a Killing, Rebecca Lavoie's and Kevin Flynn's new investigation of a bizarre crime in rural New Hampshire. With their usual narrative panache and an amazing instinct for the dramatic juxtaposition of incongruous lives, the authors have once again nailed a harrowing, larger-than-life conundrum that is too strangely wonderful for fiction and is the quintessential true crime yarn.”
“Kevin and Rebecca have once again crafted a true-crime classic,” said The Girl in the Leaves author Robert Scott. “As in Our Little Secret, their latest book Notes on a Killing is a hard-hitting tale and fast-paced read.”
The Concord Monitor raved, “We won't go so far as to label Kevin Flynn and Rebecca Lavoie's fresh-squeezed true crime book pulp-free. From its Peeping-Tom's-view cover to the way it portions out its juicy revelations, Notes on a Killing certainly won't disappoint devotees of its genre. But among the surprises between its covers - and there are plenty… are the richly developed characters and, dare we say, artful passages of writing.”
Advanced sales of the paperback and ebook editions of Notes on a Killing have landed the book in the top 10 of Amazon's Hot New Releases list for true crime. Books will be on shelves April 2.
In addition to their careers as best-selling authors, Flynn and Lavoie have become regulars on many true crime television shows, including On the Case with Paula Zahn, Deadly Sins, Unusual Suspects, Deadly Alibis, Killer Instinct, Pretty Bad Girls, Deadly Women, and Nightmare Next Door.
