Bollywood stars in town.

Bollywood's answer to Brad Pitt is attracting fans in their thousands to this weekend's Sensation 2005 at Birmingham's National Indoor Arena.

Hindi heart-throb Shah Rukh Khan will be headlining the annual extravaganza, a pageant of Bollywood stars singing well-loved songs from their best-known films.

The concert will showcase performances from award-winning actress Rani Mukherji, Malika Arora, Miss Universe 2000 Lara Dutta and starlet Esha Deol, together with up-and-coming actors Tushar Kapoor, Ritesh Deshmuk and Sneha Ullal.

As Bollywood seeps into Western culture, including beauty and lifestyle products, its film audiences are crossing over from their traditional Asian fanbase to the European market Bollywood is the biggest film industry in the world and its fanbase is huge, in the UK as well as on the Asian subcontinent.

In the period between 2004/05, four Bollywood films featured in the UK box office top ten, generating profits of pounds 21,450,016.

'The typical Bollywood film is a family-led romantic drama, very colourful, very emotional, with over-the-top acting and generally a happy ending,' said Sensations 2005 promoter Natasha Singh. 'Now because they are so much more global the range is much wider. They are not as as melodramatic as it used to be and they don't meet a general criteria.'
