He is survived by wife Pamela and two sons Aditya, a filmmaker, and Uday, an actor. "He died of multi-organ failure. He was in the ICU," a hospital official told IANS.
Filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt called Chopra's death a huge loss to Bollywood.
"My brother Mukesh Bhatt called me at 6.30 pm and was crying. He gave me the news that Yashji is no more. He was very close to him. It is a sad demise and a huge loss," Bhatt told IANS.
At the time of going to press, Shah Rukh Khan, the star of Chopra's final film, Jab Tak Hai Jaan, which is set for release on November 13, had not issued a statement or tweet. Chopra directed Khan, known as King Khan, in some of his biggest hits, including Dil To Pagal Hai and Veer Zara. Amitabh Bachchan, who rose to fame as Bollywood's "angry young man" in Chopra's Deewar, simply tweeted "T 906 - Yash Chopra passes away .. Just now a hour ago ..".
However many Bollywood stars -- many of them actors and actresses who had worked with Chopra -- took to twitter immediately to share their grief, including actress Madhuri Dixit, who appeared alongside Khan in Dil To Pagal Hai.
"Just got the news that Yashji passed on. He was one of the giants of cinema. My deepest condolences to his family. We will all miss him," she tweeted.
Chopra's five-decade career saw him direct some of Indian cinema's most iconic films, including "Kabhi Kabhie", "Trishul", EoACAySilsila', EoACAyChandni' and EoACAyDilwale Duhania Le Jayenge', creating the much-imitated romantic style that became known as a "Yash Chopra romance" and in the process winning six National Film Awards and eleven Filmfare awards and four Filmfare Award for Best Director.
Akshay Kumar, who recently lost his father-in-law, actor Rajesh Khanna, the star of Chopra's Daag, said: "I'm in shock and numb, can't believe the news, the man who immortalised love, Mr. Yash Chopra is no more. May his soul rest in peace. My deepest condolences to the family."
"Yash Uncle we will miss you. May god give peace to your soul . R. I. P," tweeted Preity Zinta, while actor Neil Nitin Mukesh, used the microblogging site to remember the director of his first film. "My first director :( remember the way he pampered me as a child in VIJAY. Worked for him. I love him truly. An inspiration FOREVER ! :( :(," he tweeted.
"From Deewar to Chandni his range was just unbelievable," said Chopra's fellow director, Ram Gopal Varma.
