Bold moves will help to emancipate women.

Congratulations to King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia for his announcement that women will be allowed membership of the Shura Council and to vote and run in municipal elections.

This is an historic decision, since hitherto women were not allowed to vote, stand for election, work freely or drive. They have to hire a driver or depend on the graciousness and munificence of a male relative to get anywhere by car.

King Abdullah has taken bold steps for which he must be commended.

Sure, some of this liberalisation is triggered by the rebellions in surrounding countries where the local populations have rebelled against centralisation of power and absence of basic freedoms. Be it so. At least, change is commencing!
