Boland braves the weather to land top trout.

Overnight frost and iced-over waters didn't stop trout and match anglers finding sport.

At Packington Fishery, near Meriden last week, 79 anglers caught 214 trout, the largest weighed 5lb 13oz and came from the Cocks Close water, tempted by a black and green lead-head pattern fished by Birmingham angler P Boland.

Tamworth angler K Milton used fry patterns to tempt a 5lb 4oz rainbow along with four more caught bank fishing the Broadwater day-ticket lake.

From Broadwater and Cocks Close, regular Packington angler Ray Cramp (Coventry), took an eight-trout limit catch weighing 15lb, a Cats Whisker pattern the successful tempter.

At Ardencote Fishery, near Claverdon, Warks. the best trout weighed 6lb, part of a six-trout catch weighing 23lb for Martin Girvan, another brace weighed 5lb apiece.

From the same lake, Mr A Priest had rainbows of 5lb 8oz and 4lb 8oz, and Brian Haswell used a small Tadpole artificial lure to tempt a four-pounder and a three-pounder.

Last weekend 26 teams of five competed the Alcester AA Team Championship along the rivers Arrow and Avon. Title winners were the Faps AFS team of Pete Rice (Redditch), Phil Maizonnier (Cheltenham), Tony Bench (Evesham), Jason Neath (Birmingham) and Tom P argeter (Warwick).

They scored 31.5 penalty points to beat Starlets 38 and Leeda (Redditch) 40.5.

Top individual was Peter Newton (Astwood Bank) who was staked along the Avon's bank at Hillborough where he float-fished a bag of chub weighing 7lb 13oz.

Last weekend Graham Young won the Blythe Water Open match at the Bridge Pool. He was at the venue last Wednesday and scored a "Double" open victory with a 9lb 2oz catch of small carp.

In the midweek Woodland View Fishery Open at Ombersley, Tony Ainsworth (MidCity) picked the bonus swim Peg 25 at the Deans Pool, and promptly won the match with a 13lb 8oz catch of small carp and roach and he found this boosted his take-home pools money by a further pounds 130.

Competing in the Highbury AC Fur & Feather event along the Severn at Lady Ham (Winnall), John Heath was the only angler to "have a bite". It produced a fine chub weighing 4lb 11oz.
