Bodu Bala Sena Vs. Muslims - Politics of hate.
Religious fanaticism has been seized as new weapon for short-cut to power and authority by some adventurous Buddhist prelates. Fanaticism is always wildly excessive or irrational devotion, dedication, or enthusiasm.
Last year suddenly the country has begun to witness a few disgruntled Buddhist monks taking Buddhism as a weapon for power and glory, while the country had the leadership of erudite and divinely Mahanayaka Theros, who 'Guide the Buddhists,' in the achievement of nibbana -salvation.
Lord Buddha taught tolerance as the guiding principle of Buddhism, but since of late we are witnessing intolerance monk trying to disturb the peace and serenity of the country.
Religion is not the opium of the masses
Religious distress is at the same time the expression of real distress and the protest against real distress. Religion is the sigh of the oppressed creature, the heart of a heartless world, just as it is the spirit of a spiritless situation. It is the opium of the people. The abolition of religion as the illusory happiness of the people is required for their real happiness. The demand to give up the illusion about its condition is the demand to give up a condition which needs illusions. Karl Marx, Critique of Hegel's Philosophy of Right
"Religion is the sigh of the oppressed creature, the heart of a heartless world, just as it is the spirit of a spiritless situation. It is the opium of the people."
The world has already witnessed the emergence of the 'Chosen Syndrome,' and how it has brought in conflict and disaster. Chosen Syndrome reflected clearly in the case of Adolf Hitler and his boast of Aryanism, also again between Jews and Palestinian and after the Second World War this 'Chosen Syndrome' has begun to rare its ugly head on regular intervals in Sri Lanka.
The imaginary notion of Sinhalese being the "Sons of the Soil" and that other ethnic groups were allowed to live on a "temporary basis" - a concession to the non-Sinhalese and to the non-Buddhists is the 'Chosen Syndrome' the country is now being threaten with.
The Buddhist 'Chosen Syndrome' grew with the emergence of 'Mahavansa Mentality,' which espoused 'the killing a virtue in defence of Buddhism.'
Sri Lanka traces its roots to the days of Mahanama, the Buddhist prelate who compiled the Mahavamsa, the Buddhist chronicle dealing with the lineage of the Lord Buddha and the Sinhalese Kings of Sri Lanka. It produced the racial propagation of ethnocentricity and Buddhist chauvinism based on myths, hearsay and legends.
However, in this context only Bodu Bala Sena - the Buddhist Force - a militant organization in the name of Lord Buddah came into existence under the leadership of a handful of adventurous monks.
Chief of Bhodu Bala Sena is Ven. Kirana Vimalajothi Thera. Secretary of Bodhu Bala Seana is Ven. Galagadatthea Gnanasara Thera. Other executive committee members are Ven. Haputhalea Paghgasara Thera, Ven. Vitharandheniyea Nandha Thera and Dilantha Vithanage (Lay Member).
Whilst these whistleblower adventurous monks are anathema to peace and reconciliation, they have already started challenging the Buddhist hierarchy in the country. Since of late they have begun to challenge the Malwatte and the Asygirya Mahanayakes - Kandyan Buddhist hierarchy.
But the reports Asian Tribune receiving since of late about these monks are not very encouraging.
A sample is given here - In 2008 when the National Anti-War Front was having a meeting and demonstration in the Viharama Maha Devi Park, Ven Galagoda Aththe Gnanasara Thero came to the venue with 25 thugs to disturb the meeting. The public reacted and beat up the thugs as well as the Buddhist monk. His robe was torn and he ran - it was said for his safety. Subsequently Mr. Kumar Rupasinghe and Minister Vasudeva Nanyakara filed action against the Buddhist prelate in the Magistrate Court and the Magistrate ordered Ven Galagoda Aththe Thero to tender public apology.
Bodu Bala Sena was formed recently and right from the day one, they are involved in Anti-Muslim campaigns, unmindful of the patriotic contributions of the Muslims for the development and racial stability and also to end the terrorist menace in the country.
There are hundreds of unsung Muslim martyrs, who fought shoulder to shoulder with the Sri Lankan Security Forces in their battle to end LTTE sponsored terrorist war in the country.
As Professor Rohan Gunaratne pointed out, "in addition to the monumental contribution of the three time Foreign Minister Lakshman Kadirgamar, I should single out the names of the founder father of the Special Forces Colonel Fazly Laphir and the Commanding Officer of the Sri Lanka Military Intelligence Corps Lt. Col. Nizam Muthaliff."
In fact these two great Muslim heroes are to be remembered, but Bodu Bala Sena were nowhere when they were fighting the terrorist war in the country, may be lurking behind available every trees.
It was unfortunate that they have come up with militant strides to safeguard Buddhism by fighting a pitched battle against the patriotic Muslims.
A handful of Buddhist monks have come out to wage a so called Dharma Yudhaya against the Muslims, Christians and Hindus.
Presently they are in the 'First space of the Dharma Yudhaya with the Muslims.
Bodu Bala Sena have clearly indicated that they wanted to turn the plate over the 1915 Sinhalese - Muslim Riot before the 100 year anniversary of the riot. They are bent on an ethnic cleansing exercises, following the footstep of LTTE leader V,Parabhakran who drove the entire Muslim population in 1990 out of the Northern Province.
When the country obtained independence in 1948, it was a secular state, and a host of Sinhalese Leaders who were involved with political pettifogging are no more with us and they all are not fondly remembered by the country.
Those Sinhalese leaders were involved with communal politics for power and authority in the name of Language and Religion.
It all started with the Official Language issue in 1956, followed by the 1972 Constitution, where special privileges were accorded to Buddhism under Section 6 - "The Republic of Sri Lanka shall give to Buddhism the foremost place and accordingly it shall be the duty of the State to protect and foster Buddhism -.
Subsequently, 1978 Constitution accorded the 'foremost place' of Buddhism was again constitutionally reaffirmed and in addition (Article 9) "The Republic of Sri Lanka shall give to Buddhism the foremost place and accordingly it shall be the duty of the State to protect and foster the Buddhist Sasna."
Already Buddhism has been given the foremost place in the Constitution of the country, but we get outfit like Jathika Hela Urumaya, Bodu Bala Sena, Sinhala Ravaya emerging as saviors of Buddhism in the country.
A handful of Buddhist monks have come out to wage the so called Dharma Yudhaya against the Muslims, Christians and Hindus. Presently they are in the 'First space of the Dharma Yudhaya ,' with the Muslims.
Bodu Bala Sena have clearly indicated that they wanted to turn around the 1915 Sinhalese - Muslim riot, an episode they consider a defeat of the Buddhists and they very much wanted to turn their defeat into victory before the beginning of the 100 year anniversary of the riot.
They are bent on an ethnic cleansing exercise following the footstep of the LTTE leader V, Parabhakran who drove the entire Muslim population in 1990 out of the Northern Province.
The vicious hate campaign was started by the Bodhu Bala Sena against the Muslims, just ten months ago, now it is nearing the peak.
The propaganda, which started with the allegation against of Muslims as feeding the non-Muslims with Halal food or Islamic food has now turned to Muslim women's attire, the 'Abhaya' or 'Hijab' which can refer to any head, face, or body covering worn by Muslim women or men that conforms to a certain standard of modesty.
The innocent Muslim women, in 'Abhaya' or Hijab have been frequently ridiculed and harassed in public and bodily harmed too. Majority community is also being asked not to patronize Muslim owned businesses.
The religious discrimination in the country has to be stopped. Every Muslim in the country feels that Government has not taken adequate action to safeguard them and their religious practices.
Since of late, every Muslim in the country feels that their women folks are not safe and they are being targeted by the Bodu Bala Sena.
Mothers and sisters are the backbone of a civil society and if a community feels that their women are in danger, the country has to take action to safeguard the innocent Muslim women.
There are moves by the Muslim leaders to urge the Muslim Parliamentarians to stop supporting the Government if the Government continues to remain a blind spectator without reining in those involved in mischievous activities against a section of the minority community - Muslims in Sri Lanka.
