The Star Divine was 20 miles out at sea when she sent a plea for help to the Amble RNLI.
The fishing boat had met with difficulty when its engine overheated after the cooling water pump failed.
As the lifeboat was on its way, the fishermen managed to temporarily rig the water pump to allow them to return to Blyth, the nearest port.
The Lifeboat escorted the vessel towards Blyth, until another fishing vessel took over, allowing the lifeboat to return to station.
