The chief economist of Bank of England said that the bank had to act promptly to stimulate the economy.

Chief economist, Andrew Haldane, said the BoE needed to come up with a 'package of mutually-complementary monetary policy easing measures' before a rate-setting meeting on August 4.

He said, 'This monetary response, if it is to buttress expectations and confidence, needs I think to be delivered promptly as well as muscularly. By promptly I mean next month.'
