Bluebirds poised to sign two.
The Bluebirds targets are due in South Wales to finalise talks and have their medicals over the next couple of days.
Manager Dave Jones says: "We are one or two players from being at full pelt.
"It's not a bad time to bring one or two new signings in to help the players we have here."
Jones and his coaching staff have been scouting throughout Britain with centre-backs the top priority.
Jones was in Scotland last week and watched two games, Hearts v St Johnstone and Dundee United v Motherwell.
He watched two defenders in the Hearts team at Tynecastle. French-born Algerian international Ismael Bouzid, 6ft 2ins tall and 27 years old, and Lithuanian international Marius Zaliukas was the other.
Bouzid was signed by Hearts from Turkish club Ankaraguou, while Zaliukas, also 27 years old, was signed by FBK Kaunas in his home country.
Neither played well on the night.
Then Jones went to Tannadice, home of Dundee United. He was watching home winger Craig Conway, who scored twice when United won the Scottish Cup with a 3-0 win against Ross County at Hampden Park.
Conway, 25, has earned one full Scotland cap, called into the team when George Burley was manager. His current contract with Dundee United runs out this summer.
Jones also took the chance to take a close look at Motherwell centre-back Mark Reynolds, aged 23.
Jones has also been tracking the form of Millwall's Danny Shittu, who is out of contract this month.
