Blow as Mo misses Coronation shot.

Byline: Jonathan Kay

BANSHA MO, who was as short as 1-2 to claim the PS5,000 Coronation Cup over 575m at Romford on Friday, is lame and was yesterday withdrawn (11.45am) from the final leaving trap one vacant, writes Jonathan Kay.

The Harry Crapper-trained bitch had been unbeaten in the Category Two event and recorded a best-of-competition 35.26sec (normal) when easily winning her semi-final last week.

"She's damaged a ligament at the side of her wrist," said a disconsolate Crapper yesterday. "It's taken a few days to come out and swell up as there's some internal bleeding there too.

"We're currently discussing the best course of treatment although the vet doesn't think it's career-threatening at this stage. It is, though, hugely disappointing for her owners and myself." Winner of the Yorkshire Oaks at Sheffield last November, Bansha Mo has not enjoyed good fortune otherwise. "She tries so hard when she runs," added Crapper, "and has got to practically every final she's tried for. But she just doesn't seem to get the breaks.

"We also had to withdraw her from a final at Monmore last year and were just hoping this was her chance to win a big competition."

In the absence of Bansha Mo, bookmakers have promoted Rockview Sail to favouritism. Gerry Ballentine's dog was sent off odds-on in last year's final only to be knocked over at the first bend in a race won by Rathglass Hero.
