Blookstock: New Stallions - Sendawar and Sagamix boost French ranks; Jeremy Early and Janet Hickman take a look at the stud newcomers in Britain and Ireland this year.

Byline: Jeremy Early and Janet Hickman

FRANCE cannot compete with Britain and Ireland for overall quality of newcomers, but there are some top-flight runners making their stud debut in 2001. Chief among them are Sagamix and Sendawar.

Sagamix (gr 95 Linamix-Saganeca, by Sagace) is standing at Haras du Logis for a very modest Ff25,000, which equates to about pounds 2,450. This reflects in part his below-par efforts in the last two years, when his best placing in just five starts was a third in the Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud. But he was a fine middle-distance three-year-old, when he kept his unbeaten record with victory in the Arc, in the process earning an International Classifications mark of 126.

By France's most expensive stallion, Sagamix is a brother to Sagacity (Criterium de Saint-Cloud-Gr1) and Sage Et Jolie (Prix de Malleret-Gr2) out of Saganeca (Prix de Royallieu-Gr2), who was fifth in Subotica's Arc and is by 1984 Arc winner Sagace. Sagamix liked soft ground, as do so many of his sire's progeny.

Sendawar (b 96 Priolo-Sendana, by Darshaan) had a grand year in 1999, when he took three Group 1 races over a mile-the Poule d'Essai des Poulains, St James's Palace Stakes and Prix du Moulin-and was given an International Classifications mark of 127. He was not quite the same horse in 2000, though he won the Prix d'Ispahan. The best son of top miler Priolo, Sendawar is a half-brother to useful Sendoro from a good Aga Khan middle-distance family.

Sendawar was second in the 2000 Prix Jacques le Marois to Muhtathir (ch 95 Elmaamul-Majmu, by Al Nasr), who has compiled a long list of stakes efforts in Europe, Dubai and Hong Kong over the last four years. His five Pattern wins also included the Group 1 Premio Vittorio di Capua and Group 2 Tripleprint Celebration Mile, and he was second in the Poulains. His dam, from a strong American family, won the Group 3 May Hill Stakes.

Other good milers are Enrique, Fly To The Stars and Kabool.

The luckless Enrique (ch 96 Barathea-Gwydion, by Raise A Cup) was second in the 2,000 Guineas (by a neck to Island Sands) and Irish 2,000 Guineas (to Saffron Walden) and was injured before he could improve on his Group 3 Tripleprint (Greenham) Stakes win. By the sire of Tobougg out of a Queen Mary Stakes winner, he should do reasonably well with his two-year-olds.

Fly To The Stars (b 94 Bluebird-Rise And Fall, by Mill Reef) progressed into a high-class miler and had his finest moment in the 1999 Lockinge Stakes. He is from the family of Nayef, Nashwan and Unfuwain.

Kabool (b 95 Groom Dancer-Sheroog, by Shareef Dancer) won three Pattern events, notably the Prix Guillaume d'Ornano and Prix du Rond-Point, and was third behind Alborada in the 1999 Champion Stakes. His dam is a sister to Colorado Dancer, who foaled Dubai Millennium.

Saratoga Springs (ch 95 El Gran Senor-Population, by General Assembly) has been covering in Australia but makes his Northern Hemisphere debut at Haras du Mezeray. A tough two-year-old who climaxed a fine season with victory in the Racing Post Trophy, Saratoga Springs was less successful at three despite winning the Group 2 Dante Stakes. He is a grandson of influential Prudent Girl from a fine British family.

Among other newcomers, Dyhim Diamond was a high-class sprinter who was second to Tomba in the 1998 Cork and Orrery Stakes; Astarabad won the 1998 Prix Ganay, having been third behind Peintre Celebre in the Prix du Jockey-Club; Charge d'Affaires won the Prix Morny; and Majorien was a high-class juvenile and middle-distance horse.

Finally, 1999 Melbourne Cup second Central Park returns to the country where he won two Group 1 events, notably the Derby Italiano.
