Bloodstock Desk: LLOYDS OF LONDON.

LLOYDS OF LONDON insurer is offering a new policy that will protect veterinary surgeons from liability claims when horses they are treating are injured or die.

Amlin Plus Limited, the equine bloodstock arm of Amlin plc - a Lloyds insurer and FTSE-250 quoted company - will offer the policy, called the `Care Custody and Control Liability Policy'.

It will cover the liability incurred should a horse die or suffer injury while in a veterinary surgeon's care. Although standard errors and omissions policies already indemnify against professional negligence, such policies typically exclude property in the care of the insured party, or else have very low indemnity limits.

And, while public liability policies cover injury to third parties or damage to the property of third parties, these, too, exclude death or injury to the horse.

Amlin Plus underwriter David Ashby said: ``We maintain very close links with veterinary surgeons and we believe this will fill a gap in the coverage.''
