Blood groups are not a big worry.

CAN I reassure Sheila Hodgkins and other readers that should you be in need of urgent hospital treatment, not knowing your blood group will not be a problem.

Biomedical scientists, as part of the hidden backroom team of healthcare professionals, will ensure that any blood given to you is compatible with your own group by means of rigorous testing.

Even in an emergency, blood group O Negative, as the universal donor type, can be given while definitive testing is carried out.

However, our ability to give this live-saving treatment depends on the voluntary donation of blood by donors - something that is sadly reducing for a variety of reasons.

Save lives - give blood!
