Blind Rehabilitation Services.

Secretary of Veterans Affairs James Peake recently announced the appointment of Gale Watson as National Director of Blind Rehabilitation Services (BRS) for the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) in Washington, DC, on August 12, 2008 at the national conference of the Blinded Veterans Association in Phoenix, Arizona. Ms. Watson has been acting director of BRS since November 2007, and has worked as a national blind rehabilitation specialist for BRS for several years, in addition to practicing low vision therapy and working as vision rehabilitation manager for the Atlanta VA Medical Center ophthalmology clinic in Georgia. With over 30 years' experience in the field of visual impairment and blindness, Ms. Watson has worked for the Alabama Institute for the Deaf and Blind, the Northeast Georgia Cooperative Educational Service Agency, and the William Feinbloom Vision Rehabilitation Center at the Pennsylvania College of Optometry (now known as Salus University). From 1988 to 2002, she was a research health scientist for the VA Rehabilitation Research and Development Center on Vision Loss and Aging in Atlanta. From 2002 to 2003, she completed a research and clinical sabbatical at the Kansas City VA Medical Center's Visual Impairment Center to Optimize Remaining Sight. Ms. Watson has served on numerous advisory boards, including her current membership on the Editorial Advisory Board of the Journal of Visual Impairment & Blindness (JVIB), in addition, she has been chair and secretary of the Board of Directors of the Association Certification of Vision Rehabilitation and Education Professionals (ACVREP), and chair of the ACVREP Low Vision Therapist Committee. She has served two terms as chair of the Low Vision Division of the Association for Education and Rehabilitation of the Blind and Visually Impaired (AER). She has also served on the boards of the Georgia affiliate of the Foundation Fighting Blindness and the Literacy Center of the American Foundation for the Blind, and as a past trustee of the Center for the Visually Impaired in Atlanta. A trusted authority in the field, Ms. Watson is a peer reviewer for JVIB, Ophthalmic and Physiological Optics, Optometry and Vision Science, the Journal of Rehabilitation Research and Development, AFB Press, and the National Science Foundation. She is the author of numerous peer-reviewed articles and, has also been an international lecturer in vision rehabilitation.
