Blind Care Association Works on Utilizing Capabilities of Society.

Homs, Central Syria (SANA) _The Blind Care Association in Homs, 162 km fromDamascus,is the first association that set up a typical kindergarten to take care of blind and visually impaired children and laid the cornerstone for the program of visually impaired in Syria in cooperation with German Christoffel-Blinden Mission (CBM).

The kindergarten was established in 1999.

Since then the program has striven to achieve its main objective, becoming a model program in early intervention for blind and visually impaired children.

The Association is also the first side that applied the project of merging the children with disabilities with the regular schools in collaboration with Homs Education Directorate.

Since the foundation until now, the kindergarten looked after and educated about 150 blind and visually impaired children in the governorate.

Currently, 25 children are educated and rehabilitated by using the way of Braille (hydrophobic characters) in preparation for merging them in the primary schools for breaking the psychological barriers for disabled children and encouraging them through involving them with their non-blind peersand pursuing their academic study.

The Blind Care Association began applying merging program in 2001 to facilitate the possibility of getting a high quality education through the integration of the blind and visually impaired children in public schools and providing all needed equipment, books and appropriate means of illustration, Director of the Association, Hanadi Rifae, said.

She added that the Association laid the foundation stone for the visually impaired program in Syria since 2007 when it began partnership with the German Organization CBM.

Head of the Association Board of Directors, Rafik Sahloul, said the Association is a charity concerned with improving the conditions of blind people of all ages and helping them financially and morally in various fields.

The Association serves about 450 families and is concerned with organizing programs and a variety of activities to introduce the blind potentials and their ability to work and be productive through visual and readable advertising campaigns.

It also carries out educational qualifying courses in some professions and crafts, especially for blind women.
