Blessed or cursed by road [...]; LETTERS.

Blessed or cursed by road of opportunity? IT is perhaps natural to allow our minds to dwell upon the positives and negatives of this traffic artery described by Lord Wyn Roberts as a " highway of opportunity" as we near the 24th anniversary of the opening of the Conwy Tunnels on the 25th October 1991.

Only one structure of its kind has been built in this country since then and that is the Medway Tunnel in Kent.

Now that we are coincidentally blessed or cursed by the nine-week interruption to the free flow of traffic to facilitate the removal of the benighted roundabouts at Penmaenmawr and Llanfairfechan it is worth noting that the most significant difference between the Conwy Tunnels and the Medway is that the Medway is not accessed by an expressway straddled by roundabouts.

As a Deganwy representative on the then Aberconwy Borough I would like to think that the 1-vote majority approval for the creation of the Conwy Marina in the casting basin of the tunnel sections was mine.
