Blessed are the peacemakers, and one of America's foremost behind-the-scenes peacemakers for the past 20 years on the international scene has been Dr. Landrum Bolling. A past president of Quaker-founded Earlham College and a World War II correspondent. Bolling has acted as an unofficial go-between in some of the world's hottest conflicts from the Middle East to the Balkans. A self-described "interventional Quaker hawk," Dr. Bolling was the man who broke the ice between Yassir Arafat and President Carter at a cocktail party, saying, "You two will have so much to chat about." In the 1980s he helped in meetings to bring together the Serbs and the Kosovo Albanians.

Landrum Bolling subsequently served as the first president of the Benjamin Franklin Literary and Medical Society, the foundation that publishes The Saturday Evening Post and seven children's health magazines.

Recently having celebrated his 90th birthday, Dr. Bolling continues his peacemaking efforts as director-at-large of Mercy Corps International and senior advisor of Conflict Management Group in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He also is senior fellow at the Center for International Policy in Washington, D.C. A newly dedicated Landrum Bolling Center for Interdisciplinary Studies and Social Sciences has been established at Earlham College.
