Bledsoe, Lucy Jane. The ice cave; a woman's adventures from the Mojave to the Antarctic.

BLEDSOE, Lucy Jane. The ice cave; a woman's adventures from the Mojave to the Antarctic. Univ. of Wisconsin Press, Terrace. 172p. c2006. 978-0-299-21844-7. $19.95. SA

From her first memories of hiding in an ice cave at the age of three on a family winter camping trip, Bledsoe has wanted and needed to be part of the wilderness. She uses it for relaxation, mental clarification, challenge and exhilaration. In this collection of stories about her adventures by herself or with friends and her partner, the author describes her relationships with friends and lovers, and illustrates the unique beauty of the landscapes she experiences, from the Mojave Desert to the Antarctic, as the subtitle says. The collection ends with the ultimate adventure, a trip to the Antarctic where she goes as an "Artist in Residence" as a guest of the National Science Foundation. Here she sleeps in an ice cave, just like her early memory. She is even allowed to go to the actual South Pole where she is totally alone, even out of radio contact, until she follows the soft sigh of a seal. Bledsoe has also written novels and has been a finalist for the Lambda Literary Award. She works as a scriptwriter for National Geographic. Nola Theiss, Sanibel, FL
