you can almost smell the gunpowder and burning timber. the boys silhouetted against the flames of their bonfire in 1951 are from the central lads' brunswick club, which met in premises in ramsden street.

they seem to have chosen an urban location for their fire - perhaps it was ramsden street, or on nearby land - but there appear to be a number of responsible adults on the background, standing in for health and safety. apparently bonfire night in 1951 was marred by heavy rain, which cleared later. the examiner photographer arrived aprs-deluge and, according to the report at the time, aprs-fireworks. more pictures of the bonfire nights of yesteryear inside.
