Blast from the past. .

SCIENTISTS have detected a beam of light from the most powerful cosmic explosion ever recorded.

The cataclysmic blast, known as a gamma ray burst, had taken nine billion years to reach earth.

The explosion lasted little more than a minute, but produced more energy than the whole of the rest of the universe combined.

The bursts have been observed a number of times since their discovery in the 1960s, but the latest was 10 times more powerful than the others.

Prof George Djorgovski, from the California Institute of Technology, said: "We were stunned."
