Birthday gift; Music.

THERE is a birthday present in store for Dr Noel Rawsthorne, one of Britain's most distinguished organists and composers, when he arrives in Huddersfield in Januar y.

Dr Noel Rawsthorne, who was 83 on Christmas Day, will be at the Town Hall on January 14 (1pm) to hear Kirklees Borough Organist, Dr Gordon Stewart, play a programme of his music. What Dr Rawsthorne doesn't know is that Gordon has recorded a CD of his works and that will be launched on the day.

Dr Rawsthorne was organist of Liverpool Cathedral for 25 years and after his retirement started composing for organ and for choirs.

Gordon Stewart has been playing pieces by Dr Rawsthorne for over 20 years.

Many of them have become firm favourites with the town hall audience.

Pieces included in Gordon's programme for this lunchtime concert are the Dance Suite which was written for a concert at Huddersfield Town Hall in 1997 and Variations for Pedals Only written for the present organist of Liverpool Cathedral, Ian Tracey.

Gordon Stewart said: "We are bringing in a giant screen and two cameras for this programme so that the audience can see what's going on at the console.

"In the pedal variations I have to play not only in two parts, one in each foot, but often in four parts, with two notes played by each foot! "It will be so good to welcome Dr Rawsthorne back to the town hall. "His music is very popular in the lunchtime concerts, and is so varied that there is no problem putting together an interesting programme". Tickets: PS5 (PS3.50 concessions) available from Kirklees Box Office on 01484 223200 or pay on the door on the day of the concert.

Lunches will be served in the Old Court Room before the concert.
