Birthday fire tragedy.

A boy celebrating his seventh birthday died when a blaze swept through the family home.

The youngster, who lived with his grandparents, had been playing in a bedroom of the house in Wood Vue, Spennymoor, Co Durham, with his half-brother Stephen Peel, aged four, when the blaze broke out yesterday evening.

Carl was found dead, lying on the bottom bunk-bed in one of three bedrooms. Stephen was rescued and was fighting for his life at Newcastle General Hospital after suffering burns.
