Perchlorate is a chemical used in rocket propellant and munitions that has been turning up in people's food; it interferes with iodide uptake by the thyroid gland and can adversely affect hormone production in humans. The US government is not concerned, but California and some other states have established maximum acceptable levels in drinking water. Perchlorate is highly soluble and ordinarily chemically stable in water, but some bacteria are able to degrade it to chloride, which can be removed. The study tested three fixed-film biological treatment processes capable of being scaled up to treat large quantities of perchlorate-contaminated water, and in a second phase, tested one of them--the acetate-fed packed bed reactor--at working scale in Redlands, California. The study recommends it. There is no index.
