Dolkart (historic preservation, Columbia U.) recounts the life of a building at 97 Orchard Street, a typical tenement house in New York City that later became the site for the Lower East Side Tenement Museum in 1988. He was commissioned by the museum's founder and president in 1988 for this study, which follows the building from the 1860s to 1935 when it was no longer residential, by tracing its architecture and the lives of immigrant families who resided there. He presents its design and construction with photos and blueprints, and considers the impact of tenement laws and reforms and changing living conditions. The last chapter focuses on the creation of the museum. Distributed by the U. of Virginia Press.
