Bio-Pic "Frida," at Senate Theater at 8 p.m. Saturday, June 7.

Detroit, MI, June 06, 2014 --( “Frida,” the bio-pic of Frida Kahlo, Mexico's most prominent artists and wife of painter Diego Rivera, whose murals are a major attraction at the Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA), will be shown at Detroit's Senate Theater at 8 p.m. Saturday, June 7. The Senate Theater is at 6424 Michigan Ave., near Livernois, and is the home of the Detroit Theater Organ Society.

Actress Selma Hayek ages some 30 years onscreen as the film chronicles Frida Kahlo's life from feisty schoolgirl to Diego Rivera protegee to world-renowned artist in her own right. A key part of the film is her rocky relationship with fellow artist and husband Diego Rivera (Alfred Molina). The couple spent much of the early 1930s in Detroit, while Rivera created murals at the DIA.

Released in 2002, “Frida” received award nominations from the Acadamy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, Screen Actors Guild and Broadcast Film Critis. It was awarded the Oscar only for “Best Score” for composer Elliot Goldenthal's musical film score.

The Senate Theater has a guarded, lighted parking lot on Gilbert St. with direct entry into the theater. The theater entrance on Michigan Ave. will also be available. Audiences will be able to hear the Wurlitzer Theater Pipe Organ played before the movie. Economical refreshments are available in the lobby and served by DTOS volunteers.

The Senate Theater, built in 1926, was one of many “neighborhood” movie houses. The theater fell on hard times in the 1950s and was acquired by the DTOS in the mid 1960s to showcase the Wurlitzer Theater pipe organ from Detroit's Fisher Theater. The DTOS group installed the Wurlitzer with its 2,000 pipes and ornate and colorful console in the Senate Theater so that members could enjoy playing this unique instrument and to present public concerts on it. Membership and volunteer opportunities are available.

More information is available at the DTOS website - -- or by calling the concert phone line, 313-894-4100. Group tickets are available. The Senate Theater is available for rental for programs in the auditorium and private parties.
