Bill quit Corrie 'for son'.

ACTOR Bill Tarmey quit his much-loved Coronation Street role as Jack Duckworth after his son was diagnosed with a brain tumour.

Bill, who left the cobbles in November 2010 after 30 years, was widely thought to need a rest after having a quintuple heart bypass.

But yesterday, he revealed his son Carl had a tumour known as a glioma and required a six-hour operation. Bill, 70, said: "You would have had to drag me kicking and screaming from the Street, it was my life and I loved it. But I needed to be with my family and Carl."

Carl's tumour has now shrunk but it will take five years before he gets the all-clear.

Bill added: "I thank the Almighty every day that Carl's still here."
