Big weekend of motorway works; ROADS: Drivers face overnight closures as traffic flow scheme is extended.

Byline: Patrice John

A SCHEME to install hi-tech traf- fic signs will lead to large-scale motorway closures in the West Midlands this weekend.

Signals, signs and new overhead gantries will be installed on the M42 and M6 as part of the expansion of Active Traffic Management (ATM).

The scheme allows motorway operators to vary speed limits and open the hard shoulder to allow traffic to flow smoothly.

Highways Agency spokesman said: "All diversion routes will be clearly signed using a combination of the Highways Agency's variable message signs and temporary yellow signs, both in advance and on the nights of the closures." Overnight closures tomorrow will be made at the M42 northbound, junction 9 underneath the junction; M42 southbound between junction 9 and 8, and the M6 junction 4A to

M42 junction 8 northbound and southbound link road.

Diversion routes will be in operation between junction 9 of the M42 and junction 4A of the M6. For traf- fic using the M42 northbound, heading north east, the diversion route is via the top of junction 9, rejoining the M42 at junction 9 northbound on the slip.

The diversion for traffic using the M42 southbound from junction 9, heading south, is via the A446/A452 south to the A45, then west to rejoin the M42 at junction 6. The diversion for drivers using the M42 southbound heading for the east and west via the M6, is the A446/ A452 south to join the M6 at junction 4.

Traffic using the M6 southbound heading for the north east via the M42 north, will be diverted via the M6 southbound at junction 4. Traf- fic will exit and join the A446 north, joining the M42 northbound at junction 9.

Drivers using the M6 southbound heading for the south via the M42 south, will be diverted via the M6 southbound at junction 4 and join the A446/A452 south to the A45, then west to join the M42 at junction 6.

Overnight closures on Saturdaywill be made on the M42 northbound between junction 6 and junction 8, and the M6 junction 4A to M42 junction 8.
