Big addition at United States Cold Storage - Lumberton, N.C. comes on-line.

Top officials from United States Cold Storage, the North Carolina state government, Robeson County and Lumberton City officials were on hand to celebrate the official opening of a 1.5 million cubic foot addition to U.S.C.S.-Lumberton.

U.S.C.S. President Tim Bridgman presided at the gala ribbon cutting ceremony, which was attended by many vendors and employee family members. Mr. Bridgman said the expansion was a symbol of United States Cold Storage's growth and commitment to excellence in the public refrigerated warehouse industry. U.S.C.S.-Lumberton provides the highest quality--storage and distribution service in the Mid-Atlantic region.

A distinguished public official, North Carolina Commissioner of Agriculture Jim Graham, made a special point of attending the opening of the expansion. Commissioner Graham, resplendent in a Southern style white suit and hat, hailed U.S.C.S.-Lumberton for its state-of-the-art technology and its increasingly valuable contribution to the area's economy.

Indeed, U.S.C.S.-Lumberton Vice President-Manager Bill Garrison noted that since United States Cold Storage opened in Lumberton its employment has grown 8 times its initial number.

"In 1988, we could have all the employees over to my house for a picnic--but now we have greatly outgrown my yard," Mr. Garrison said.

U.S.C.S.-Lumberton's operating capacity has grown quickly, almost doubling its storage space and more than tripling its blast freezing capabilities.

With the new high-tech addition, the fast-growing U.S.C.S.-Lumberton facility now offers a storage capacity of more than 3.8 million cubic feet and a blast freezing capacity of 736,000 pounds of product daily. The new addition adds four blast freezers to U.S.C.S.-Lumberton.

The Lumberton facility offers fully racked storage space capable of maintaining temperatures from minus 20 |degrees~ F to plus 50 |degrees~ F. U.S.C.S. Lumberton now offers over 14,000 racked pallet positions serviced by fully enclosed refrigerated truck and rail docks. The facility is capable of handling 18 trucks and 4 rail cars simultaneously. Precise temperature control is also ensured by a computer controlled engine room.

Located on Kenny Biggs Rd. (Route 1), U.S.C.S. Lumberton is in the very heart of the Carolinas'. It has easy access to Interstate 95, the important North/South corridor, and it is served by CSX Railway. Vegetables, poultry and pork comprise the biggest product categories handled at the facility, Mr. Garrison said.

U.S.C.S. Lumberton provides important transportation services, blast freezing, product tempering, export container stuffing, stretch wrapping and military shipping. The facility includes a U.S.D.A. meat and poultry inspection center.

Since its opening in 1988, Lumberton has been a state of-the-art facility, offering sophisticated inventory control and ordering with its IBM System 36 computer.
