Bidcom to Chair Construction/Project Management Working Group for aecXML.

Leading Building Industry Players Team to Create XML-Based Communication

Standard for Construction/Project Management

SAN FRANCISCO, Dec. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Bidcom(TM), Inc., the building industry's first e-business services provider, today announced that the company has been elected to lead the Construction/Project Management working group, one of six such groups that make up the aecXML Project(TM). Larry Chen, chief technology officer (CTO) at Bidcom, will chair the group on Bidcom's behalf.

The aecXML Project is a building industry consortium founded by Bentley Systems in August 1999 to standardize the definition and exchange of architecture, engineering and construction (AEC) data. Based on the emerging eXtensible Markup Language (XML) standard for electronic communications over the Internet, aecXML will use an XML schema to describe the information that is routinely exchanged between building industry professionals. Using this schema, industry companies will be able to share project information and conduct e-commerce across all software applications. More than 450 organizations world-wide are participating in the aecXML project.

"The Internet creates the potential for businesses that serve the AEC community to dramatically reduce the costs incurred during the project lifecycle," said Bidcom CTO Larry Chen. "From Web-based communication and collaboration, to information gathering and materials procurement, building industry professionals will benefit from the common data exchange standard captured in the forthcoming aecXML schema. Bidcom is pleased to be able to contribute to this process by chairing the Construction/Project Management working group of the aecXML Project."

The Construction/Project Management working group is one of six working groups established since the aecXML Project launch last August. The project quickly attracted the support of leading vendors, and stands today as a model for cooperation on standards development within vertical industries.

In addition to Construction/Project Management, aecXML working groups address the following areas:

-- Design/Estimating/Scheduling/Cost Management

-- Product Catalogs

-- Procurement

-- Operations/Maintenance/Facility Management

-- Plant

"The highly fragmented AEC industry, particularly, can benefit from a unifying strategy for data interchange," said Jerry Laiserin, AIA, interim executive director of the aecXML Project. "Current industry data exchange and reuse practices are inefficient, and with hundreds of thousands of transactions worldwide and annual expenditures in the trillions of dollars, it is easy to predict significant savings in streamlining the processes."

According to Bidcom's Chen, the success that the aecXML Project has enjoyed thus far stems from the broad industry support that has characterized the effort from the beginning. "The end result of all these competitors working together will be an industry standard that creates huge time and cost savings for consumers," Mr. Chen added.

About the aecXML Project

aecXML is a framework for using the eXtensible Markup Language (XML) standard for electronic communications in the architectural, engineering and construction industries. It includes an XML schema to describe information specific to the information exchanges between participants involved in designing, constructing and operating buildings, plants, infrastructure and facilities. The various software applications used by these participants can transfer messages formatted according to the aecXML schema to coordinate and synchronize related project information. In addition, a standard aecXML specification will facilitate e-commerce between suppliers and purchasers of equipment, materials, supplies, parts and services based on that same technical information.

Membership in the aecXML Project's Construction/Project Management working group includes:
