Bid to examine MEP expenses.
Byline: PENMAN INVESTIGATES
The great MPs expenses scandal in Westminster could be about to be repeated for members of the European Parliament.
Every month each MEP gets something called the General Expenditure Allowance which is worth almost PS4,000.
It is supposed to be spent on office costs, but whether this really happens is a mystery because MEPs do not have to account for it - and they want to keep it that way.
A group of journalists have embarked on legal action to force MEPs to disclose how the money is spent, which the European Parliament is desperately resisting.
Its spokesman said: "The European Parliament is not in a position to make any comments as the case is before the European court."
