Bice Wilson: 'Future of region clouded'.

The future growth and development of the New York metropolitan area is unnecessarily clouded, says an environmental advocate whose approach to regional planning has been getting a lot of attention lately - thanks to the current Cooper-Hewitt Museum exhibition on "The Power of Maps."

According to Bice Wilson, an architect and planner., "We have already developed much of the region beyond sustainability and are on the brink of continuing to do so in the ex-urbs." Yet although we want to heed this warning, the environmental mandate - "Think globally, act locally" - has been easier to talk about than to achieve, Wilson states, "because traditional ways of defining our locales lack the proper perspective.

"Our current gerrymander jurisdictions can't serve us a a basis for planning a sustainable future. You can't preserve the ecology of a town, but you can preserve a watershed, said Wilson, a Westchester resident and partner in Meridian Design Associates, Architects, which has completed or envisioned buildings, earth-sensitive residences, and earth sculpture.

Meridian Design Associates is also responsible for the local environmental mapping segment of the Cooper-Hewitt show.

In presentations on the use of mapping to engender social change organized around the Copper-Hewitt exhibit, Wilson has been advocatin, bioregionalism as a tool that will serve everyone as a common frame of reference.
