Beware of loan sharks at Christmas.

VALE of Clwyd AM Ann Jones has warned residents to beware of loan sharks in the run up to Christmas.

The winter holiday has become a notorious hunting period for illegal money lenders as they look to take advantage of hard working families who need that extra bit of cash.

In some extreme cases, loan sharks have been known to charge extortionate rates of interest, sometimes in excess of 1,000% APR.

Ann Jones AM Ann Jones said: "As far as I'm concerned loan sharks are the lowest of the low. These people prey on the most vulnerable members of the public in Denbighshire and they can't be tolerated.

"The danger is that as people struggle during the recession and in the run-up to Christmas, they feel forced to turn to illegal money lenders and quickly find themselves in a downwards spiral of debt.

"I urge any victim of a loan shark's activities, or friend or family members, to call the Wales Illegal Money Lending Unit's 24 hour helpline on 0300 123 3311."
