Betty Jo Harker.

Betty Jo Harker, past president (1985-86) and the first female president of GFOA (then known as the Municipal Finance Officers Association), died peacefully at the age of 95 on February 23, 2019, in Ames, Iowa. Betty was part of the Finance Department of the City of Ames for 30 years.

From 1973-75, Betty was state chairman for the MFOA At that time, the organization had 5,200 members. In that position, she served as liaison representative for the association in all activities of public finance officials in Iowa.

Betty was born in Omaha, Nebraska, on August 21, 1923. She grew up in South Omaha, graduated from South High School in 1940, and attended Nebraska State Teacher's College in Peru, Nebraska.

Betty is survived by her son, John Harker of Ames; her daughter, Vicki Harker of Ames; her four grandchildren, Erin Halverson, Justin Harker, Brooke Harker, and Katherine Harker; her great-grandchildren, Sydney and Delaney Halverson, Jaxon Harker, and Jentry Harker; and her two special dogs, Max and Lucy.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Dorcas Society of the Cambridge United Methodist Church in memory of Betty.
