Betting Trends: All-weather boost.

WHAT was colleague Paul Haigh saying the other day about all-weather racing and the fact that betting-shop punters are still prejudiced against the new kid on the block, kicking sand in the faces of jump racing enthusiasts?

This column bows to his greater practical experience out in the field, but the reality of the figures has been gnawing away at the perceived wisdom of the argument for more than two years.

Take the month of December, when, against an open period for the jumpers, three AWT meetings made Ladbrokes' top 20, and a Lingfield card all but equalled Wetherby's Bank Holiday attraction.

Take Monday 27 itself, when Kempton and Wetherby stood centre stage in Britain's biggest betting-shop chain, but Wolverhampton posted just short of half the King George day turnover for third place.

Wolverhampton used to stage jump racing on

Boxing Day, and more than one old-timer will be spinning in the cemetery at the thought of all-weather taking over.

But it is very doubtful if the old fixture would have beaten six others - all jumping - for off-course punter interest, allowing that TV involvement spread no farther than the betting shop and the Racing Channel.

The Tote's on-course cash returns are slanted by the crowd figure, but even in these calculations Wolverhampton managed to slip above three others, registering one-quarter of Kempton's tally.

No sign of prejudice here.
