Farmer Clegg's Night Out is a delightful picture book that will be enjoyed by people of all ages. It has a wonderful and wacky cast of animals, led by Woolworth the sheep, who roll up to take part in a nocturnal talent contest (a kind of Old Macdonald's Farm meets X Factor).
The illustrations are brilliant, with big, bold cartoony characters leaping across the foreground. Then there are entertainingly, quirky details at the edges that children will have fun finding. There are mice playing on every page, a chicken with an 'L' plate round her neck and a duck with a paper bag on his head. The rhyming text is lovely--lively and anarchic. The Honky-Tonk Honkers are 'all going bonkers', and 'Their jazz has pizzazz you can never feel blue to/ These guys are the geese you can never say boo too!'
It's packed with visual and verbal jokes, including a nicely satisfying twist at the end. This is a book which adults and children will love to share and to read over and over again. Smashing!
