Bentley Walker First to Launch Services Using Hughes Mesh Satellite Technology in Middle East and Afghanistan.

Advanced single-hop HX technology unlocks wealth of broadband applications

GERMANTOWN, Md., Aug. 3 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Hughes Network Systems, LLC (HUGHES), the global leader in broadband satellite networks and services, announced today that its European business unit, Hughes Europe, has signed an agreement to supply Bentley Walker with its new HX mesh satellite network technology for delivering broadband services in the Middle East and Afghanistan.

The contract calls for adding a fifth HX hub with the new mesh, single-hop functionality at Bentley Walker's Network Operations Centre (NOC) in Bedford, U.K., and marks a major extension of the existing agreement between Hughes Europe and the satellite Internet services provider.

"This is an exciting new development," said Anthony Walker, CEO, Bentley Walker. "We already have extensive coverage across this important region, which offers tremendous opportunities for growth. However, this significant investment in Hughes advanced mesh technology will enable us to take a major step forward and, as the first provider to deliver this feature across the region, to offer a real competitive advantage to our customers."

The HX platform is a compact, cost-effective satellite solution for smaller networks that provides high Quality of Service (QoS) and employs the most efficient implementation of the global IPoS/DVB-S2 industry standard, including Adaptive Coding and Modulation (ACM), approved by TIA in North America, and ETSI and ITU in Europe. Besides supporting single-hop connectivity among multiple sites in flexible user groups, the advanced HX technology also enables simultaneous implementation of both mesh and star networking topologies.

"Our HX System offers a technically superior and highly cost-effective alternative to other mesh and SCPC (single channel per call) options in the marketplace," added Christopher Britton, managing director, Hughes Europe. "It brings service providers unprecedented flexibility to implement any combination of mesh and star networking topologies, which is especially valuable when delivering both voice and higher bandwidth services, such as video-conferencing."

The Hughes HX technology also enhances GSM backhaul capability, enabling cellular service providers to expand GSM coverage simply, quickly, and cost effectively -- especially valuable in remote geographies where the cost of installing a fibre infrastructure would be prohibitive. In particular, HX routers can interface with industry standard L-band BUCs (block up converters), so operators can:
-- Potentially reuse hardware already in place; and

-- Use higher powered radios to achieve greater upload speeds and to
provide service where otherwise it may not have been possible.

Bentley Walker displayed the new Hughes HX260 mesh router at the recent CABSAT event in Dubai and received universally positive responses from public and private sector organizations such as government ministries, banks, and telecommunications companies.

"Looking ahead, we plan to maintain our technology lead working with Hughes," confirmed Walker, "by deploying a fifth hub on the Telstar 11 satellite just launched, to enhance our offering in the Middle East and Afghanistan."

"We have an impressive track record in anticipating market needs and responding with advanced scalable solutions based on a robust design and software development strategy," said Britton. "Together with Bentley Walker's existing strong geographic presence and pragmatic approach to market development, this provides the ideal springboard to take full advantage of the huge opportunities which this important new technology offers."
