Benjamin gets back to hisroots.

HE left school without being able to read or write. But Benjamin Zephaniah returned as one of Britain's most critically-acclaimed poets.

Born and bred in Handsworth, he was acclaimed as Person of the Month on a visit to Broadway School in Perry Barr.

"It has always been my dream to come back to my old school", the 54-yearold told an assembly of pupils.

And he congratulated the school for being "rooted in the real world" and being "a place to prepare young people for life".

Zephaniah left school with no literacy skills aged just 13.

But in 2008, he was ranked 48th in a list of Britain's top 50 post-war writers.
