Benin : AFD, EU fund first solar power plant in Benin.

The French Development Agency (AFD) and the European Union have announced they will fund a 40 billion CFA franc (60 million) solar project to be developed in Benin.

The AFD will provide funds of around 32.8 billion CFA franc for the 25 MW schemes, while the EU will contribute the balance 6.6 billion CFA franc.

The French Embassy in Benin said the Defissol project will be sited in the municipality of Pobe, in the Plateau Department. It will be the first large-scale PV power project in the country, and one of West Africa's largest.

The facility will supply electricity to local power utility, SBEE.

The government of Benin says that the project will decrease power prices for households, and will help stabilize the network of SBEE.
